Cochabamba
21 km from Cochabamba, Hacienda Pairumani embodies the visionary legacy of Simón I. Patiño. This historic estate is now a living laboratory for sustainable agriculture, a space for cultural transmission, and an ecological park open to all. Blending memory, innovation and education, the Foundation implements a model of local impact where each hectare combines respect for nature, agricultural know-how and community commitment.
Located 21 kilometres from Cochabamba, Hacienda Pairumani is one of the most emblematic sites of the Simón I. Patiño Foundation. Acquired in the 1920s by Simón I. Patiño, it was first a family residence and model farm designed to test modern agricultural techniques. Today, it covers 500 hectares and combines historical legacy, sustainable agricultural production, biodiversity protection and knowledge transmission.
Villa Albina, located at the heart of the estate, reflects the elegance of the Patiño family. This majestic residence, now a museum, invites visitors to discover personal belongings, period furniture and architecture that is unique in Bolivia. Open to the public, it offers a tangible link between family memory and national heritage.
Officially founded by the Foundation in 1970, Hacienda Pairumani promotes environmentally friendly agriculture adapted to local conditions. It notably produces certified organic dairy products, based on careful natural resource management.
The focus on irrigation, soil conservation and ecosystem health makes it a reference site for testing and promoting sustainable farming practices. The site also serves as a learning platform, welcoming researchers and technicians to experiment and refine these methods.
Of the estate’s 500 hectares, 46 are dedicated to an ecotourism park open to the local population. The park offers an introduction to Andean ecosystems — native flora, local fauna, marked trails — all designed to spark curiosity and promote conservation. Visitors, whether families or groups, can explore the interconnections between agriculture, environment and society. This immersive experience includes educational content on biodiversity, water management and environmentally responsible farming.
Hacienda Pairumani is not limited to production and conservation. It also hosts educational workshops to raise awareness among younger generations about sustainability challenges. Guided tours explain the life of Simón I. Patiño, his impact on Bolivia’s economic development, and the values behind the creation of the Foundation. Meanwhile, the estate regularly becomes a stage for cultural events — exhibitions, concerts, conferences — held outdoors or in dedicated spaces. This dialogue between culture and territory deepens the site’s connection to local life.
Hacienda Pairumani operates at the heart of a human ecosystem. Its agricultural and tourism activities generate employment for local residents. The Foundation works closely with schools, universities and local organisations to develop collaborative projects and share knowledge. Park access is designed to be inclusive, with attention given to welcoming all visitors, including people with disabilities or those with limited access to cultural offerings.
Hacienda Pairumani embodies the Foundation’s main areas of action in a single location: heritage preservation, commitment to sustainable agriculture, active education and community development. It represents a coherent vision where tradition and innovation come together in service of the common good. Whether to explore its trails, visit Villa Albina or attend a workshop, each visit opens a window onto a living territory rooted in history and oriented toward the future.
