Santa Cruz
At the crossroads of research, pedagogy and the land, Hacienda Patiño in Santa Cruz embodies the Foundation’s agroecological vision. This experimental centre welcomes researchers, students, farmers and schools to test, share and grow sustainable agricultural models. Here, science takes root, is shared and cultivated daily in service of rural communities.
Located in Santa Cruz, at the heart of a key agricultural region, Hacienda Patiño is more than just a farm: it is a space for experimentation, training and knowledge sharing. Created and managed by the Simón I. Patiño Foundation, it reflects the Foundation’s commitment to sustainable agriculture adapted to local realities. This one-of-a-kind place connects science, land and community.
The Hacienda fulfils multiple complementary missions: applied research, dissemination of sustainable farming techniques, training of future professionals, environmental awareness, and outreach to surrounding regions. Relying on a rigorous agroecological approach, it actively contributes to reimagining agricultural practices in Bolivia.
The site develops and tests farming methods adapted to the region’s climate and geography. Trials focus on sustainable soil management, efficient irrigation, biodiversity preservation and crop resilience to climate change. Each solution is designed for practical application on small farms.
Each year, the Hacienda welcomes students, interns, PhD candidates and agricultural professionals. Internships, workshops and practical modules enable them to learn innovative, replicable and economically viable techniques on the ground. This hands-on learning directly responds to the need for professionalisation in Bolivia’s farming sector.
The Hacienda’s vegetable gardens serve as teaching tools to introduce children, teens and teachers to agroecology. Awareness days and guided tours are organised with schools and youth groups. Participants learn about natural cycles, useful biodiversity and everyday sustainable practices.
Each season, “Días de Campo” (Field Days) allow the general public, producers and partners to observe agricultural innovations in real conditions. These events encourage the exchange of practices, strengthen ties between researchers and farmers, and make agroecology’s impact visible in the field.
The knowledge generated onsite is valued and shared beyond the farm. The Foundation disseminates experimental results through publications, institutional partnerships and offsite training. The Hacienda acts as a transfer hub between scientific research, the farming world and local development.
Hacienda Patiño is a driver of transition for Santa Cruz and its surrounding areas. It shows that agricultural performance, environmental respect and social justice can go hand in hand. By leveraging local resources, training tomorrow’s actors and raising youth awareness, it plays a key role in advancing food sovereignty in Bolivia.
